what's eating this tree?
Posted: Sat Jan 31, 2015 2:08 pmI have a 40 ft cedar that has a bunch of small holes in it. It is happening all the way up the tree. Is this man made or some sort of borer? Does it need to be culled?

I agree it looks like the work of a woodpecker. Have you seen any on that tree? If it is woodpeckers, then there definitely are insects under the bark. I have seen similarly affected trees that stood for decades so I wouldn't worry about its health unless you start seeing more dead branches than live. Hope that helps!
